Well, the point actually was you don't _have_ to remember all
those cryptic codes... :-)
I'll look into it, but this raises a UI question: is it OK to
display data in one format in an editable field ("drxwrxwrxw")
but accept editing only in another format ("777")?
Why should it be allowed to edit only in the "777" format? I'd
suggest: If a user replaces the "d-rw-..." string with "644" and
leaves the field, it jumps back to the "dwr--..." format
according to the value "644" ("-rw-r--r--", then).
Sounds unintuitive to me, frankly.
OK, you have to read the docs to find that the function even exists.
I think at least it should accept changing one of the 'r's
to '-', for instance... but then I'd have to write a special
formatter to not let people change (or even select) the 'd'...
Simply put it into an other, non-editable text field, right in
front of the editable field (as an idea).
