Make the box where you show the -rwxr-x-r-x POSIX-type permisssions editable. I'd like to be able to select that box, and then type "a+w", or "777", or anything else that chmod can understand, and have XRay apply the change.

Well, the point actually was you don't _have_ to remember all those cryptic codes... :-)

I'll look into it, but this raises a UI question: is it OK to display data in one format in an editable field ("drxwrxwrxw") but accept editing only in another format ("777")?

Why should it be allowed to edit only in the "777" format? I'd suggest: If a user replaces the "d-rw-..." string with "644" and leaves the field, it jumps back to the "dwr--..." format according to the value "644" ("-rw-r--r--", then).

Sounds unintuitive to me, frankly.

OK, you have to read the docs to find that the function even exists.

I think at least it should accept changing one of the 'r's to '-', for instance... but then I'd have to write a special formatter to not let people change (or even select) the 'd'...

Simply put it into an other, non-editable text field, right in front of the editable field (as an idea).

Cheers,
Markus
