Well, lets say I reuse this function about 100 times. I pass this function an object, I want the function to release the object regardless of the state of the object.

What? This doesn't make sense. The way you are going about this sounds completely wrong, I suggest you rethink how you are doing things. I couldn't comment without some more in-depth information, though.

How come nobody else ever has this problem? :-)
