Rainer,
Either I don't understand your message, or you don't understand mine.
Yeah, tastes differ. That's why things should be optional. I, for one, would
want a _LONGER_ delay before text d&d; since I wrote some twenty-odd books
and articles uncounted, I guess I can somewhat judge what's nice for writing
and what's not for me!
Your're right, my fault. I assumed (falsely) that you use drag&drop
more than copy&paste, as I do, and was puzzled how a longer delay
would help with that. If you're satisfied with a delay, and want 5
seconds, you should get it.
I therefore from now on will endorse your request:
(i) PUT THE DELAY INTO THE DEFAULTS DATABASE
that's extremely simple implementation-wise and extremely powerful from
user's perspective. Rainer would set it to zero, I would set it to five
seconds;

The delay in 10.1 is half of that in 10.0.
How much (in seconds) is it anyway? I noticed I'm making less drag
errors in 10.1, so for me I got better. The fact that the delay is
being tinkered with shows that someone inside Apple is sensitive to
the issue, but as long as the delay is hard-coded, some of us will
always be unsatisfied...
(ii) ALLOW FOR IMMEDIATE TEXT D&D WITH SOME MODIFIER
I would recommend Alt or Command
Alt (Option) is already used for copying (instead of moving) the
selected text. Command would be better, but a delay preference would
be better than an extra modifeier.
