I wonder why our loop gets shutdown then. Does NSDefaultRunLoopMode
automatically connect to the WindowServer?

Uhm, you can use runloops. For example, SecurityServer uses a CFRunloop
IIRC, and that's a root daemon that runs continuously AFAIK :-)
