I had preordered this book from Amazon, and it arrived on Monday. It's
594 pages, including the index, so it is a very big book. I've started
plowing through it, and it seems well written. The type size doesn't
bother me.
The book is divided into 3 parts. The first part (192 pages) is
introductory material: evolution of programming, computer/OS
architecture, overview of frameworks and OO programming, 3 chapters on
the programming languages of OS X, 3 more on the frameworks. Part 2
(195 pages) is called Designing for Mac OS X, and covers topics like
planning, Project Builder, Interface Builder, prototyping, help,
packaging your app, and managing your code (CVS). Part 3 (238 pages) is
called Writing for Mac OS X, and includes chapters on applications,
building blocks, events/notification, visualization (views/windows),
interface design, documents/files, menus, printing, games/multimedia,
services, scripting, and writing frameworks.
I'm about 50 pages into the intro material. After that, I'll probably
start jumping around. Based on the TOC, it doesn't seem to be a book
that you have to read in order from cover to cover. Instead, it is - as
the name suggests - a guide from which you can pick the topics that
interest you. The chapters appear to be very focused and well organized.
It's hard to tell from just 50 pages, but I like it so far.
