IMHO, they're almost always pointers. The problem is finding which class they belong. When doing this for carbon calls, its sometimes best to look for base types. StringPtr, refNum, FSRef (think one of those in CoreMenuExtraAddMenuExtra is an FSRef? Would probably make sense)
