OT: Quitting the dock - an endless saga uncovering the deepest secrets of OS X

OK, while trying to figure out how to quit the dock, I discovered that the process is linked up to an application called Window Manager, which is actually this file:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/
CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Window Manager

which is aliased and run from:

/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer

Is this what I think it is? (A window manager, possibly alterable...)
