Of course HFS+ is hardly the last word in file systems. I want something
better than either UFS or HFS+.

Such as...?

To my knowledge, you should be able to add such things to Darwin fairly easily (as far as these types of things go), and from there just beg Apple to get things working with it on OS X. Or do some of the work as far as that goes yourself. I don't really know what would be involved for that, though.
