Hi all :)
Just some general views based on the large number of email on the subject :)
First, extensions are needed. why? two reasons: unix machines (forget
pc's if you want. Perosnally, I try to avoid them and use solaris and
macs most) do use file extensions. Second, creator / type info is not
always maintained on internet transfer. Even macs will benefit from
extensions in this case and can recreate a creator / type entry.
Second, what happens if you have two files of the same name and
different type? Well, icons were mentioned. this is very true and
will usually do the job. But may i just point out that this behaviour
of hiding extensions and allowing two apparently same named files
already exists on the pc and I have not heard of any problems. The
only thing that might confuse is if the error message generated if
you try to save two identical files (same name and type) and all it
says is 'this file already exists'. Instead it needs to say 'a
'<enter file type here>' file with this name already exists'.
Third, may i just point out that, based on the behavior outlined, I
think this system will work. The biggest problems with the pc system
were the potential of renaming a file with an extension '.a' and the
extension hidden to a type '.b' only to find it names '.b.a' and the
fact that you can only hide or show all extensions - there is no
intermediate. Apple seem to have covered both of these.
Just my little views :)
Robert
