I think the general consensus is that the existence of filename
extensions is not a bad thing, as long as the finder has an alternate
means for filetyping. Preferably, one that is required by the
guidelines, not just there "for increased operability with Mac OS 9"
like Types/Creators.
If I could make a suggestion:
Since for now, we are obviously stuck with filename extensions to
determine type, what about the creator? Is apple going to expose an API
(or has done so already?) to allow access to however the Finder Get Info
window sets what application to open a specific file in? At the very
least, this would give us with the functionality of a per-user creator.
Finally, many here agree that there are better ways to store file types
than by using the filename. Can Apple tell us (even just saying Yes,
with no details for now will be good enough...), do we have any hope of
a typing system that doesn't require filename extensions in the near
future? Or does Apple intend that Filename extensions will be the
primary means of determining type for a long time?
