Because the learning curve for two buttons and a wheel is steeper enough
than that of a single button to make it inappropriate for a Macintosh's
target user market.

I also belive that it's intended to be a reminder to developers - user intefaces should be simple enough to be useful with only one mouse button.
Look what the availability of _three_ has done to various Unix GUI:s... <shudder>

Please do not discuss this on this list. The matter has been raging on the apple HI list for the last two weeks and reached monstrous proportions. Please read what has been said there, and add to it, if you (despite the sheer amount of what was written) have anything to add to it.
