Mostly I've used the supplied class documentation, snippets
of sample code, and some on-line tutorials. Please, somebody
tell me there's an easier way.

Many would argue that this is the best way to learn. Ask questions and puzzle things out for yourself. It may be slower but you really learn the stuff <g>.

On the other hand it is very frustrating and slow and you are quite likely to miss a few concepts.

Although I have not read the book in question, I gather it does a good job of explaining concepts and leaves it up to the reader to battle through the harder stuff. Sounds sensible to me :)
