I have never studied autoupdating, so perhaps it is not relevant here for
some reason, but each application (I guess that's what you meant by
"program") *IS* uniquely identified by its CFBundleIdentifier value of Info
plist.

This information is both unique and persistent; it can be extended by
CFBundleVersion if need be.
