In case anyone else has the same problem in future, I'll tell you how I eventually fixed my NSDrawer and its NSTextView. I just had to sent send setVerticallyResizable:NO to the NSTextView before doing anything else - quite a simple thing, but I missed it the first time through the NSTextView documentation.
