I've spent the last year trying to learn Cocoa, and I'm still working on
it.
I just use the archived list as a reference if I have a question, and I
quickly scan through the new lists of messages as I receive them to see
if:
a) There's something that interests me, or
b) there's something that I have knowledge about and may be able to
answer.
I would say that, in my experience, the steps to learning Cocoa are:
1) Just start reading the intro files trying to figure out what the heck
Cocoa is.
2) Reading through the PDFs from Apple to get a feel for Objective-C and
get a sense of what's going on.
3) Buying a book or going online, and going through a tutorial.
4) Try to build a simple application by yourself, and then constantly
using reference material to try to get the darn thing to work.
5) Learn how to use Apple's online documentation to figure out how to
add cool new classes to your application.
6) Skimming through each class in the Foundation and App Kit to get a
feel for what's out there, so you know what's there for when you need it
later.
7) Start building a real application, and pull out your hair when
something that looks easy to do, doesn't work.
At this point, you want to start checking through the archives to see if
someone had the same problem, and then post a message if things are
looking bleak. Eventually you'll start to feel comfortable with certain
things and it will be your turn to contribute back to the forum and
Cocoa community!

Okay so I got the Mac OSX and I got bitten by the bug - wanting to learn
to programm ... what ever that would be just want to learn something
new ... so I got the books and I got the web-sites to learn and the
right computer and the desire .... and now that I am subsciribing to
this list I feel like I need a COCOA FOR (REAL) DUMMIES Book ... David
Pogue should write that ...
So anyway can you guys promise me that I will feel ANY better some
day??? I mean all of you had to start somewhere, right? ... dang I am
just not patient... :)
I will watch this list and as soon as I understand the first post here I
will let you all know ...
