Has anyone done any optimization work on the IJG's libjpeg implementation? e.g. an alitvec version of the i/dct?

I've found that NSImage fails miserably on partial jpegs, and doesn't support progressive jpegs, so now I am using libjpeg, but as portable as it is, the performance isn't so hot.
