At a minimum, Carbon will hang around as long as Office is needed and MS
doesn't rewrite it in Cocoa. I don't see either of those changing for a
long time. On my development schedule, I've got one I'm doing in Cocoa (and
I love it!) and another that may be in Carbon (so that people running OS 9
can use it).
Cocoa is the better environment for programming OS X. It's a great system,
though there are some Mac features are still clumsily implemented. Of
course, you can call Carbon from Cocoa (which is another reason to doubt
that Carbon is going away). But, it's a very good framework, and the
graphic Interface Builder is fantastic.
If you are considering writing in Carbon, I strongly advise getting
CodeWarrior and developing in PowerPlant. PowerPlant is a good framework to
work with, and makes many things easy. Programming raw Carbon is possible,
but painful. The only reason to develop in Carbon is if you have lots of
old code, or you want something that will run on OS 9 as well as OS X.
