sounds reasonable, it would have been nice if cocoa had let us do this directly... (are all lists only text or simple images ?)

Almost all, so far as my 10+ years of OpenStep experience can say -- there is so little number of reasonable exceptions that, with the simplicity to implement your own NSCell subclass, it is not worth a special API.
