They discourage menu extras.
NSStatusItem (and its brother, whose name I always forget) are perfectly
acceptable ways to add things over there, as far as Apple's concerned.
Check the documentation for more information. Cocoa Dev Central has an
NSStatusItem tutorial (it has some other stuff too) that'll be out around
August 24 as well (only 15 days, 4 hours, 43 minutes left <g>) but that's a
long time to wait.
