Disk images, I think, are easy for the user. They've been around
for quite a long time, and I think users have gotten used to them.
Well, as a user, I find disk images annoying... If a folder is simply
stuffed or gzipped or whatever then I just open it and move the
folder to where I want to put it - I have StuffIt Expander set to
delete archives after expanding them so there's no mess. If the
software is in a disk image (even without any extra compression) I
have to mount the disk image, copy the files to where I want to put
them, unmount the disk image, and then trash the .dmg file. It seems
like so many extra steps, including a copy which seems redundant
since the files are already on my hard disk. I'm still baffled as to
why people distribute their files in disk images on Mac OS X, it
wasn't common at all on OS 9. The only advantage I can think of is
that it would preserve long filenames.
By the way, where did this thread come from? Searching my Cocoa-dev
mailbox, I can't find the original post about FTPClient beta, just a
whole lot of posts about how it should be distributed.
