Tis a shame the Mac doesnt support .bz2 (bzip2 compressed) files as
standard. Everyone is moving to it and it gives maybe 30%
better compression than gzip.
I agree - that a 'Mac' file format should be the native download
one to avoid customer disillusionment, but making Mac OS X support
what ever other platform is doing would not be difficult for Apple -
its a bloody nightmare for developers to do so. (Should I ship
bunzip2 as part of my app? Well, yes I do but alas its inside the
gzipped .pax file....oops).
My 10MB download might only be 6MB.
sit/hqx are not good compressors.
At least Mac OS X understands .dmg's which is a nice format - alas
unportable. (Some of us want to d/l and inspect a Mac package on
our Windows (oops!) or Linux (double-oops!) box first.
