And if it _can_ be done, then you should try before hassling the user.
I suspect a large part of this argument is varying views about what a file is. So what is a file? Is it the directory entry or is it the run of data on the disk? Or is it the tuple?
And on this from later on:

Sure there was. You copy the file and then remove the original. You're telling me there's another way to achieve moving data between physically distinct stores?

And yet a user might do it. Period.
And the answer to the first question is: "It depends." I love that I can move the directory containing images for a large FileMaker table and everything just works. I _hate_ that for years - and it may still do this - ClarisWorks/AppleWorks kept a reference to its support folder and wouldn't work right if the reference was invalid even though there was a correctly named and structured directory available.
