Completely agreed, Charles.

NeXTSTEP / NEXTSTEP / NeXTStep / OpenStep had some truly wonderful UI conventions and innovations. So has Mac OS. Even Windows has the occasional UI feature that is pretty damned neat/useful -- I haven't found quite as many of 'em, but there is a handful.

We could all stand to learn from the platforms we are not familiar with and, frankly, could learn a thing or two from the platforms we consider to be our target markets. How often have any of you actually sat and watched a relatively novice user and taken notes of the HCI experience?

We finally did that on our product and learned a slew of things that we could improve...

Mainly since the exact opposite is true. Did you use daily *both* OS7/8/9 and NeXTStep? I bet not: *all* users, without *any* exception, whom I know to use Mac OS and NeXTStep both -- and that includes myself -- felt great,
intuitive, and convenient in NeXTStep, whilst limited, forced to do nonsenses, and inconvenient in Mac OS.

Not to go for too complicated tricks: just the plain OSn (triple alas, also n==X) idiotic limitation to only one corner when resizing a window is enough for an example. Or the impossibility to switch apps when a dialogue was shown, whew!

Please let's not make this into a flame war, okay? This has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.
