Getting a list of applications that can open a file has been part of other operating systems and is not purely a Mac functionality (at least NeXTStep from 1990s and Windows XP have similar functionality). Maybe "File Type" is purely a Mac thing, because you are translating "File Type" to mean specifically a type/creator thing.

But, Finder's "Open With:" info pane works on a file created with "touch bob.jpg" in a terminal window, so I'm thinking it is not dependent on any Mac specific type thing. So, I don't see any implication in bhanson's post that suggested purely Mac only functionality.
