Cocoa registering signal handlers

I suppose NSFileHandle or related classes registers signal
handlers. Which ones does it register, and how does these
handlers work? Eg, how are NSFileHandle's ...inBackgroundAndNotify
methods dependent on the signal handlers.

Is this documented anywhere?
