Sven,
Please make sure that you're looking at
/Developer/Examples/AppKit/HexInputServer on your local hard disk.
It's installed as part of the Developer CD.
You're talking about BasicInputMethod that is indeed a Carbon TSM
example.

I don't know why you got the impression, but it is an example of
NSInputServer.
Now I am really confused. My impression after reading the documentation
on NSInputServer was, that you have to create an NSInputServer object
that answers to all those messages in the way you want it to, then put
it
along an 'Info' file into a bundle in /Library/InputManagers, whereas
the
example project doesn't contain anything with NSInputxxxx and its readme
asks you to place the input server into /Library/Components.
Besides, the documentation for NSInputServer mentions some Edit>Input
Menu, whereas the Readme for BasicInputMethod mentions the keyboard
menu.
And, of course most gravely, I can't see any Cocoa in the example. So if
it really _is_ the same (which I'll need some explanation to understand
as it doesn't look the same), I'd ask for a Cocoa example...
I hope that made clear why I got the impression.

The Macintosh may only have 10% of the market,
but it is clearly the top 10%.
