Just repeatedly asserting that Quartz is nice and fast, doesn't really mean much to me. Some figures to sustain that would be much more persuasive. How do you know, that there aren't a few other "easily avoidable special cases" lurking there too ?

I mean (paraphrasing you here) if the Quartz guys are convinced that their code is really fast - and then use what looks like a possibly quadratic algorithm, it just casts some shadows of doubt...
