I wasn't interested in setting or unsetting any existing applications -- merely using a similar mechanism.

For now, you can create your own generic daemon pretty easily and add it to the login items if you need to do so. However at some point in the future I would imagine this won't be necessary.

Yes, but it seems silly to do that when there's apparently no need to run a daemon, as evidenced by the fact that other applications aren't.
