[ Recap of original problem: My app properly allowed you to open and save documents of the types defined in my project. However, it saved documents without any type info. ]

Thanks! This was a very enlightening lead. I double clicked on one of the untyped documents and got the finder's Open with Application... dialog. After selecting my App, it gained type info and the correct icon for its type. Now when I save a document from the app, it has the type info!

Will this always happen when a file is saved and opened for the first time after the app is installed on a new computer? If so, how can I automate the process and eliminate this usability killer?
