the programs: hostinfo/sw_vers.
look into the source for hostinfo on Apple's Darwin site to see how to
get the kernel(Darwin)'s version,
how many cpus, and memory installed.
Look into the archives for the OS version/OS build.
Also look into sysctl(3).
