It all depends on who you ask ;) NeXT users will always say "the Alt key" (since NeXT keyboards had an Alt key, and OpenStep PC's as well), and Mac users will always say "the Option key".

End users will know it as the "option" key, and your docs should follow suit. But in the developer community, it will likely be more widely known as the "alt" key, especially with things like NSAlternateKeyMask floating around.

Since I'm a NeXT user, and because "alt" is one less syllable than "option", (and because Apple is NeXT now ;) I tend to call it the alt key.

Now, if only I could get the command key back below the space bar like the NeXT ADB keyboard...
