Is this a known issue of NSImage initWithData:, or do I have a non-
standard GIF file that other (more tolerant) applications happen to be
able to read? Has anyone had the same problem and can maybe point me to
a solution?

The GIF reading code in the AppKit may have problems with some images. Please file a bug and include the problem images. Unfortunately, the only solution I can suggest is to go through QuickTime's image importer functions or try find some free GIF reading code that doesn't have a problem with the image.
