I would like to drag items to my NSToolbar without having to bring up the customization window. Basically I want to emulate the Finder and be able to drag and drop files and folders into my toolbar.

You might want to recreate a customized version of NSToolbar anyway, since in the special case of a Finder clone, one of the IMHO most needed additions would be a toolbar with a user settable number of icon rows - I'm constantly running out of space with the one-row toolbar the Finder offers.
