(1) This particular bug has *nothing* to do with file extensions. It has *everything* to do with the difference between app wrappers and non-app wrappers and how that affects application names. This has been an issue for as long as the NeXT platform has existed. Yes, it causes some minor problems. But they are minor in comparison to the *significant* advantages of using wrappers-- directories-- to contain applications. To name one of the many, it means that you can pick and choose exactly which localization packs to install.

(2) Whining about hiding/showing/appending/removal of extensions is not appropriate fodder for this list. Take it to email@hidden. That *entire* list is devoted to debating Apple's design and implementation choices. If you have a specific-- likely Cocoa related-- question as to programatically dealing with type/creator/extension issues,
ask it here. Otherwise, take it somewhere appropriate.

(Getting a little bit tired of people confusing metadata with types/creators or resource forks.... Metadata is a set of features. Types/
Creators (and resource forks) is a particular implementation of Metadata. There are other implementations. OS 9 and prior is dead. OS X will evolve. Move along now, nothing to see. If you really want your feedback to count, send a well written, thoughtful, submission along to bugreport.apple.com. Apple does pay attention. Seriously. I have been using bugreport.apple.com *heavily* for quite some time and OS X reflects that feedback.)

So, it does have to do with filename extensions. We wouldn't have to bother
with this hiding/showing/appending/removal stuff if Apple wasn't trying to
switch from type/creator to only using extensions...
