Darin,

Ahem, just like IconBuilder, non-local DO connections, EOF/Cocoa, OpenSesame
and generic full-featured window server supporting NSHosting, implicit
system-wide fax support, tearoff menus, programmatically-accessible dock
icons, almost bug-free Unicode support, user-definable shortcuts, preference
pane to hide unwanted Services, the DarkForest thing for making space on disk
(no, OmniSweep, beside being paid for, is by far not as useable),
spellservers run automatically if needed, and sooooooooooooooooooo many
others :((((((((((

As for HTMLEdit, I guess the thing was that
- HTMLEdit used the same frameworks as WOBuilder of WebObjects;
- when WO were totally crippled by tearing them out of Cocoa, those
frameworks were supported no more...
- ...and thus farewell, HTMLEdit!

As for sensibility of all the involved decisions I'd rather not comment on :(((
