Of Cells, TableViews and Matrices

Perhaps someone at Apple can help me with this question: Is it possible to use a NSComboBoxCell within anything OTHER than an NSComboBox?

The reason I ask is that I'm having a hell of a time getting an NSComboBox working from within NSTableView and NSMatrix. The NSComboBoxCell works partially when placed into these views (the down arrow properly displays the dropdown list), but for some reason, editing the text in the combo box does not work at all.

I did a little investigation and noticed that the documentation states that NSWindow maintains some text editing data structures for "light editing tasks", such as might be used within an NSComboBoxCell. Perhaps the NSComboBoxCell relies on code within an NSComboBox control for coordinating with the window to set up the editors. If that's the case, it explains why the cell isn't working in an NSTableView or an NSMatrix. Are there any other cell types that will only work from within certain controls?

Also, is there any possibility of Apple open sourcing some or all of Cocoa?
If indeed there is a problem with NSComboBoxCell, I'd be more than happy to try to fix it. I'm sure the Apple developers are swamped with more important things.
