How to make Tiff with a mask?

I looked at various Cocoa apps, and most uses tiffs in the
toolbars that are nicely masked. How does one go about creating
it? It looked as if the mask is defined by the black pixels
surrounding the image. But when I tried to do so, I get a big
black square around it, not the mask. I looked all over Apple's
docs (searching for tiff and mask), and come up with nothing.
