The problem he raised (the need to mentally connect the concept of needing
valid window instance variables to needing a loaded nib file) was endemic
throughout the Cocoa documentation. It has been somewhat improved in the
recently updated documentation.
It is analogous to the need to "get" object-oriented programming. For
example, learning that you have to implement a method even though you will
never call it yourself, because some built-in object will call it for you.
It is one of those "Aha!" things. It is certainly important to be explicit
about it in documentation and books.
