frozen window

I've given my app a Preferences window that lives in a separate nib file.
I'm able to summon the window - it appears on the screen when I choose the
Preferences menu item - but everything in it is frozen. The sliders won't
slide, the text fields can't be edited. The default button doesn't throb. I
can click the mouse on the default button to close the window, and the
window does close, but the button doesn't depress as I click on it.

What might I be doing wrong? I've confirmed that the window is key, I've
tried moving its level forward, etc. Thx - m.
