If I recall correctly, NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP supported service bundles. The bundles had the extension .service and if placed in one of the standard .../Library/Services directories they would be loaded dynamically by all applications. Ie, no need to launch an application.

I'm not sure I remember correctly though, and I can't say if it works this way in Mac OS X.
