I can see by the gentle voices of reason that I've gotten in a bit over my
head here! Yes, a database would be ideal (never realized how much I'd
gotten used to it). I appreciate the advice.

- I can't change the flat files. Gotta work with them as-is at this stage,
since it's all there is. Could process them into a database, but it's not
practical in this situation.....yes I know it's odd :-)

- The editing functionality is not really necessary, I just got ahead of
myself. I got "creative" and ambitious -- a dangerous combination!

Well, when you do decide to add modifiability, and changable flat files, you might consider an old system, a little discontinued now (but you might find it if you look around) called EOF. It had a flat file adaptor that was pretty fully functional, without needing any real datbase.

It was distributed by some fruity company -- Banana, I think it was.

Well, if you want EOF back, file a bug with that fruit company. This is the only way we might convince them to reconsider their decision. Don't just rant, tell them exactly, why you need it so desperately.

I am a Mac 10-Cocoa/WOF/EOF developer, and I'm available for hire. Please contact me at michael-job @ stb.nccom.com if interested. Resume at http://resumes.dice.com/keybounce
