It is my experience that programming is often unpleasant if you are trying to go against the grain of the established structures. It is best when in Rome to do as the Romans do. But I understand that you are trying to port an existing program which has built-in assumptions about the way drawing should be done and so it is difficult to change to use a more Cocoa-oriented approach (e.g. non-overlapping views). I come from a background of X Windows programming yet I find it quite pleasant to use the Cocoa classes in porting X Window applications. But I completely scrapped all of the user-interface portion of my old code and started fresh with Cocoa. I know that not all of us can afford to do this.
