Probably because the listings of all directories are stored in a
single file in HFS+, it's *extremely* easy to "Get" them.
Not sure if UFS has something similar, but I believe FATx and NTFS do.

Seriously though, what might be the reason for the speed difference?
I would have expected UFS to be more-or-less a direct copy of the
BSD filesystem and I haven't heard of speed problems on straight BSD
systems.
