I've found the relevant docs now, so this is clear to me now, thanks again!

Of course, the crucial question remains:
I found
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework/Versions/A/Headers/CFStringEncodingExt.
h which indeed contains constants for a lot of different encodings.

Still, I have absolutely no idea how I could map the RTF setting \fcharset80 to one of the encoding constants mentioned there.
