Yes, NSWorkSpace's openURL: method will open a URL in an appropriate handler based on your Internet prefs. If the URL is not successfully opened, this method will return NO.

I've only tried http:// and mailto:, but these two work perfectly.

API to launch a file URL corresponding to the file you want to preview.
