Thanks for the reply, Andy.
I realize horizontal splits are available. What I'm interested in is the
"visible" control that only seems to be available for vertical splits
(which looks very similar to an elongated "=" symbol).
Hoping this helps clarify my question.

Yup, the very same NSSplitView will do it. In Interface Builder, you
can set the Orientation attribute to either Horizontal or Vertical.
