Even so, I'd rather have ugly, non-portable code than use such an ugly hack as loading myself into all Cocoa applications system-wide, or even than using AppleScript/AppleEvents to communicate with System Events.app. If you cared to look at the Carbon Process Manager API (instead of breaking into a "Carbon sucks! AHH! RUN!" mode), you would see that it's actually quite self-explanatory and easy to use.
