In OS X application - System Preferences, users can choose the icons below the toolbar and the window redraws itself and resize itself nicely.

How can I create such an effect? I will be great if you can outline what APIs I should look for.

The method you want is -setFrame:display:animate: in the NSWindow class.

Is there any sample code?

I don't think so, but it's a pretty simple thing to use.

There's an example of doing this in the Garfinkel & Mahoney book.
