I wonder if it's a compiler bug. What release of the Dev Tools are you using?

If you could isolate the problem to a simple stripped-down version of your class, you could submit it as a bug to Apple. For that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing the code myself and reproducing the problem. There's no reason that particular line of code (which looks perfectly fine in the first place) should compile differently in your category than it does in your main class.
