Have you tried to create a NSBitmapImageRep from -
(id)initWithFocusedViewRect:(NSRect)rect. This should create a
representation that you can either add to an NSImage via -
(void)addRepresentation:(NSImageRep *)imageRep. This should copy the
superview and all subviews into the image (I am assuming it is images
inside the NSImageView you are interested in.) The other thing you
could do is create a NSImageView off of the viewing area of a window in
IB and draw it there with the appropriate outlets. Either way you still
have to make sure that you have the focus locked on the superview. Good
